Running the ultimate race

Hebrews 12: 1-3

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

No matter who you are, you are running a race in life. Whether it’s a race to get that dream job offer, or a race with the biologic clock to get married and have children, or a race against disease and illness at the end of your life, everyone has a race to run.¬†Sometimes it seems that life is an endless series of races. And that thought is monstrous and depressing.

But the Bible shows us that there is only one true race that we are called to participate in, and that is the race of endurance towards Jesus. God calls us to throw off everything that hinders our pursuit of Himself and his command to love him and our neighbors. It’s a race of enduring suffering, of resisting temptations, of forgiving others who wronged us, of learning to love genuinely. And during this process, Jesus sanctifies us and blesses us with qualities like kindness, meekness, righteousness. Qualities that ultimately make us more like Jesus himself.

Jesus is the pioneer and perfecter of our faith- what a powerful and assuring realization! We are not running this race alone, Christ is always beside us.
